City, The Philippines
This school was established
in 1905 as an elementary trade school known as the Iloilo Trade School.
By virtue of commonwealth
Act No. 313 in 1939, the school was converted into a National School of Arts
and Trade with Iloilo School of Arts and Trades as its official name. 1940, the
school offered the Two-year Teacher Education Curriculum for the graduates of
the secondary trade school and Three-Year Education Curriculum for graduates in
general high school.
In 1951, the school was
authorized to open the degree of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education
(BSIE). The school was made a training canter in the development of industrial
arts program when the team of Industrial Educators from Stanford University
arrived in 1957. In 1968, it also became a training center for implementation
of the reconstructed manpower program of the National Manpower and Youth
Council. In 1974, the Education Development Project Implementation Task Force
(EDPITAF) identified the school as the Regional Staff Development Center (RSCD)
for Practical Arts in Western Visayas. It also pioneered in the implementation
of the graduate program for vocational technical education in 1976 offering the
degree Master of Arts in Teaching Vocational Educational.
In May 1983, by virtue of
Batas Pambansa Blg 395, the school was converted into a character state college
known as the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology.
The College has grown into a
leading technological and professional manpower development institution as it
serves Region VI and whole country. To meet its vision as the center of
Excellence in Science and Technology, the College has established its Local
Area Network (LAN) that links different colleges and departments to the
internet for vast resources of the virtual world.
Through this worldwide web
the college get wired, giving our students, faculty, and staff access to
information highway that is needed to harness instruction, research, extension,
and production of the college. The College Library Has Its Online Public
Catalog (OPAC) for the users to retrieve fast and easy information on the
author, title and subjects of the books.
The Administration and
Operation of the college has been certified by Anglo Japan American (AJA)

1.5-hectere lot across the road in addition to its present 4.75 ha. Area that
accommodates the main campus.
Laboratory School of ISAT U is a secondary school which
have 4 grades, 2 grades for lower secondary school and 2 grades for upper
secondary school. They have 10 subjects for every grade such as math, science,
english, health, filipino, shop, physical education, araling panlipunan (social education), and revitalized homeroom
guidance program or character education.
1.2 Academic Support System
Lab School of ISAT U has 8 classrooms, one room for each
section in N-Bldg of College of Education of ISAT U. There are 2 sections for
each grade (ilang-Ilang and Sampaguita sections for grade-7, Molave and narra
for Grade-8, Eagle and Falcon for Grade-9 and Gold and Diamond for Grade-10). Another facilities are Canteen, Science Laboratory, Computer Laboratory, Food Laboratory and Fashion
Laboratory also for dressmaking.
But some rooms like Alumni Room
and Clinic Room
are joined in ISAT facilities.
The facilities in school
are appropriated
for the student, such as whiteboard, table, chair, chalk, and toilet outside of the
classroom. But some classrooms not have the
projector.
There are also basketball and football area. So the students can improve their
sport skills there.
1.3 Teaching System
Teaching system in Lab school of ISAT U followed the rule
of K to 12 curriculum for grade-7. The teacher started the lesson with the last
topic. They should review about that and build connection between them and
students. Therefore, the students will active in learning and learning will be
approached by students. After that, teachers gave some motivation that is
related to the topic to motivate students and begin the topic. As long as the
students learn, teacher should monitor the students activities and facilitate
them to learn. At the end of lesson, teacher asked the students to do some
exercises. Similarly in grade 8, 9 and 10 that use Technical Secondary
Curriculum, they build connections with students because the students should be
active in learning.
1.4 Materials and other Learning Sources
Materials for lesson sources
in Laboratory School
of ISAT U almost complete. There
are some laboratories like Science Laboratory, Computer Laboratory, Food Laboratory and Fashion
Laboratory also for dressmaking. There are also library and study corner like
park to discuss outside of the classroom. Then, all of classroom has smart television and
white board for facilities
learning. Although the
projector is not provided for every classroom, the teachers are permitted to
borrow that from facilities office room. Besides that, manual text book is not
provided to students, that is why some of them don’t have manual text book.
1.5 Measurement and Evaluation System
Every teacher evaluated their student universally depend
on the subject. They gave 4 exams per grade, it’s means the students should
finish their exams twice a semester. Not only that, but also they have some
assesment and assignment per topic. So that all will be measurement contents to
be evaluated by teachers. The teachers
gave scores for every content, collect the data and then calculate the scores
totally. The students are given 10 scores if they can answer a problem
correctly. So they got scores 50 in case they could answer 5 of 5 problems
correctly.
1.6 Curriculum
The Lab School of ISAT U is using updated curriculum in
The philippines, it is K to 12 curriculum guide for grade-7. So the teachers
made a lesson plan or Daily Lesson Log (DLL) that is includes daily activities
of students in learning. But they still using Technical Secondary curriculum
for grades 8-10. That’s why the teachers must to make a detailed lesson plan
for their lesson. The detailed lesson plan includes students and teachers
activity as long as the teachers taught.
1.7 Teaching Plan (of my major)
According to the curriculum that is used in Lab School of
ISAT U, especially in math subject, well-planned lessons plan or teaching plans is detailed which is include all
of student activities. On the other hand, the teachers also prepared worksheets
that were focused on the
conceptual learning goal. The
most important thing is the concepts to tell that math could help the student
to solve some problems. Thus, the students will know how to apply some theories
in their daily life.
2. Pedagogical
Content
1.1 Teaching Methods
Teaching
methods that is used in Laboratory School of ISAT U are expository method. So
the teachers gave direct instruction for student in learning. That is why
teachers are the major information provider. But sometimes, the teachers gave
the chances for students to find and construct their knowledges. Then, the teachers
asked student to solve some problems and discuss about that. And at the end of
lesson, students are asked to apply theories and they are given assignment.
1.2 Learning Materials and Innovation
The
teachers already prepared the lesson and the materials. Therefore the teacher
explained the topics clearly.
Students followed the lesson actively. Sometimes
the teacher make some jokes to
make the situation more friendly
when learn the subject. So, they will not bored
when they learn about the topics. Frecquently, the teacher speak loudly make
sure the student hear their explanations.
1.3 Sources of Learning and Technology
Sources of learning in Laboratory School of ISAT U are from manual text book,
internet and power point presentation. The teachers taught based on manual
textbook, but it is not provided from school. Thus the students should bought
manual text book. Some of them didn’t buy the text book, that’s why they go
around the class to find and borrow the book from their classmates. On the other
hand, the students usually find help from the internet when they have some
problems and barries to solve it.
1.4 Authentic Assessment
The teachers evaluate the students by giving them some
assessments and assignments. The students should pass the formative and
sumative test to go to the next grade. They have 4 exams per grade. Besides
that, the
teachers will measure scores from assignment autentically, usually the teacher
gave essay problems. It is means the teachers will check description and final
answer from student papers.
3. Teaching
Plan
1.1 Curriculum
Schools have using the curriculum of the government,
sometimes the teacher uses K to 12 curriculum with the modification. The
teacher adapt the curriculum with the situation happened in the school. Lab School of ISAT U already used the K to 12
curriculum. That is the updated curriculum in The Philippines. But, it is just
for grade-7, so the teachers made and applied Daily Lesson Log (DLL) in their
lesson. However, in grade 8 to 10, they still use Technical Secondary
curriculum. That’s why they should make detailed lesson plan.
1.2 Teaching Plan Related
Before the student teacher practice how to teach, in my
case math subject, they are asked to make a lesson plan and another preparation
for teach. The process of
making a lesson plan by student teacher made through a manual system. After the student teacher made it, cooperating teacher
will check it and give some advices. And also, the cooperating teacher guide
the student teacher to make activity sheet creatively. Below is a lesson plan that has been created by
student teacher SEA-Teacher Project during the teaching practice SEA-Teacher
Project at the Laboratory School
of ISAT U.

2.
Energizer
Okay my beloved students, before we start our lesson, i
have some common word in indonesian. Do you want to know that?
Plus,add : tambah
Minus, substract : kurang
Times : kali
Divided by, over : bagi
So now, if i say ‘’selamat pagi anak-anak’’, please
answer ‘’pagi pagi pagi ma’am ika’’.
Let’s try.
Selamat pagi anak-anak.
Class, i have six cards here, please keep one number in
your mind and i will guess the number in your mind. Who want to join with me?
Okay, have you keep one number in your mind? If you
already have, i will show you the card then tell me if the number in your
mind is exists in the card. Remember that, don’t tell me about the number.
For example, after you keep one number, i will show you the first card. If
the number is already exists in the card, just say “there is ma’am” but if
there is not exist the number, please say “walak ma’am” and i will continue
to the next card.
Do you get it?
Actually, i have some riddle and trick about math. So
you are not bored when you learn about math. If you want to know, i will tell
you. But, please follow the lesson first. Are you agree?
|
Yes ma’am.
The student try
to read the word
Okay ma’am
Pagi pagi pagi
ma’am ika.
Yes ma’am
Okay ma’am.
Yes ma’am
How can you
guess the number ma’am?
Yes ma’am.
|
3.
Review
Okay class, can
you tell me anything about our last lesson?
What you can
say about line and its slope?
|
-
Our last lesson is about line and its slope ma’am.
-
If the line passes through a points (a,b) and has slope
m, so we can find the equation of that line using this formula:
y-b = m(x-a)
-
If two nonvertical lines are parallel, then the slopes
are equal
-
If two nonvertical points are perpendicular, then their
slops are negative resiprocals.
|
4.
Motivation
Okay class, who can tell me about the distance?
Somebody please answer me, did you go to somewhere? How
many kilometers the distance from your house?
Did you remember the distance from your house to the
school?
So now, please watch this video and tell me what are
they talking about?
Then, look at this picture.
Yeah, if you want to know how many kilometers you
walking to go to here, just follow this lesson.
By the way, for your information, the next topics are
related with our lesson today. That is all about the distance formula. But,
don’t try to find the distance from Indonesia to Philipines.
|
How can we find
the distance ma’am?

B. Activity Proper
|
|
1.
Grouping
of Students
Now, i
will group you by counting. So, the first number 1 to 5 will be group 1. The
second number 1 to 5 will be group 2 and soon.
So,
start from you.
Go to
your group now.
Okay
class, before you start your activity, i will tell you how to find the distance.
Do you
remember about the video?
So, if you want to find the distance from one point to
another point, you can use this formula:
P1 P2 =
Do you understand?
Any question?

2.
Analysis
So, what do you find from your activity sheet?
Can you generalize it?
|
|
D. Discussion
|
|
So, let us define the distance of two points. And then
we are going to clasify the result of the slope. From your activity sheet, we
know that:
· The
distance between any two points on a number line, horizontal or vertical, can
be found by simply finding the length of the segment determined by these
points.
· If x1
and x2 are the coordinates of A and B, respectively, on a
horizontal number line, then the distance between A and B is:
AB = |x2-x1|
· If y1
and y2 are the coordinates of C and D, respectively, on a vertical
number line, then the distance between C and D is:
CD = |y2-y1|
· The
distance between two points P1(x1,y1) and P2(x2,y2)
is:
P1 P2 =

4. Observation
on Teacher
1.1 Planning for Teaching
The cooperating teacher already prepared some lesson plan
for his lesson. That is detailed lesson plan which includes the teacher and
students activities. The lesson plan has been followed the curriculum that is
used in Lab School.
1.2 Preparing Lesson and Materials
Because my cooperating teacher usually apply expository
method, so he just prepare the materials. Then he explains the materials
clearly untill all of the students understand about that. He also prepared
about the assessment that will give to the students.
1.3 Teaching in Class
The teacher explained the topics through inductive
approach. So the students are given some examples that is related to the
topics. And then the teacher constructs some main concepts together with
students. Based on that concepts, the students are guided by teacher to solve some
problems. After that, teacher and students discussed about the solutions and
fixed the correct answer. Finally, the students know how to solve some problems
using application of the topics. Therefore the students could complete their
assessments and assignments.
1.4 Measurement and Evaluation
The teachers gave
individual test about the related topic. But sometimes, he just ask the
students some problem and give them 2 minutes to answer directly. That can
refresh the students mind to call back their memories. Then the teacher gave
some quiz and assignment. One of the students will collect their papers and
pass it to teacher. After the class already finished, the teacher checked
students paper and gave the scores.
5. Teaching
Practice
1.1 Procedure of Teaching
Procedure of teaching of my teaching practice had
followed my lesson plan. That’s like what i showed before. For the first step,
i gave greetings and the chance for the students to pray. Because of my
religion is different with their religion, so i ask a student to guide them.
After that, i givesome energizer for the students like games or riddles in
math. The students was so exited to join and know that. I showed some uniqe
numbers in math like how to guess the hidden numbers. Then i ask some questions
about the last lesson and the studentswill recall their memories about that.
And then i give them some ilustrations like pictures, maps, videos and another
media to motivate them. That ilustrations include the benefit of the topic in
daily life that is showed on the screen.
However, the students will learn and know that the topic is useful for them.
After that, i try to explain about the topic concepts using power point
presentation and give the chances for students to ask if they don’t understand
yet. The next step of my teaching practice is grouping the students. I give
them activity sheet and they should complete it by group, but sometimes by
pair. And that’s good to know that the can complete it correctly. Then we are
going to discuss about that and find the correct solution. After that, we discuss about the application
of the topic and solve some problems. I gave questions session for the
students. And at the end of the lesson, i give individual testf or them and
should answer it in the given time. After they finish it, they pass their
papers and i explained once again the conclusion of the topic. Finally i ask
them to do some assignment.
1.2 Time Management and Organizing Activities
I already spent time for 25 hours in the Laboratory
School. That’s includes observation, teaching assistant and teaching practice. For
teaching practice in my final demonstration, given one hour to teach and below
is time management and organizing activities.
- 15 minutes for preliminary activities (greeting, pray, energizer, review andmotivation activity)
- 15 minutes for main activities (teachers explanation, discussion, question and answer the task).
- 25 minutes for student activity and quiz
- 5 minutes for the conclusion about the materials
1.3 Problem Solving
I found some problems when i taught the students in Lab
School. I think that’s because i have different accent with the philippinos.
Sometimes i can’t understand what are they talking about and they feel like me
too. So that’s why i should explain the topic twice or more. And then, some of
the students can’t understand and they didn’t participate in their group to
complete their activity sheet. Therefore, i come to every group and give
scaffolding and help them also.
1.4 Classroom Management
As
a profesional teacher, classroom management is the important thing to do. So
that’s why i try to manage the classroom and make the situation to be
condusive. For example, if my students so noisy, i will ask them “what are you talking about?” then and make
sure that they stop to be noisy and focus to the lesson. After that, i will
suggest them to cooperate in their group but the situation still condusive. I
told them that i will choose one of them randomly to present their activity in
group. However, they will learn and try to explain each other. Finally i could
make sure that they all understand about the topic.
6. Summary
and Suggestion
1.1 Purposes of Practicum
·
General
Purpose
The teaching practice aims to provide opportunities
for students to gain experience as a factual professional educators who have a
set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the profession as an
educator, both in their country and abroad.
·
Specific
Purpose
a. To enable Student teachers to develop it Teaching and pedagogy
skills.
b. Encourage Student Teachers to Train their English skills.
c. Allowing student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view.
1.2 Procedure of Practicum
We have 4 stages in this practicum such as orientation
and observation in the first week, then
teaching assistant in the second week, teaching practice in the third week,
the last week is for evaluation and reflection.
1.3 Outcomes of Practicum
·
Student
teachers can improve their
knowledges,
attitudes and skills professionally in educational institutions both in their
country and abroad.
·
Student
teachers can develop their abilities
to be a good teacher in the future life.
·
Student
teachers recognize local cultures in other state institutions that are expected to be
inspirational in creating better systems in their country.
1.4 The Challenges of Practicum
The challenge during my practicum is how to be a good
speaker even if our accent is different. I had tried to make the students
understand about my lesson. In addition, speak loudly is a challenge for me but
i try to make sure that they can hear my explanation. Another challenge is how
to make math subject is easier so they will have fun in math lesson. That’s why
i show some riddles and games for them.
1.5 Overall Impression
I
love all of about the Philippines especially in my practicum activities at Laboratory School of ISAT
U, Iloilo city. I found so many experiences which is make me learn
about education systems in the Philippines. And also, changing cultures in all
perspectives is the best experience for me. I shared anythings about our
cultures as Indonesian people and accept the new cultures from Philippinos. I
think this is the best moment in my life to be apart of SEA teachers project. I
also write my journey and all about the Philippines spesifically, because i
want to remind this moment forever.
1.6 Suggestions for next improvement
I thought one month is too short for teaching practice. We as a student teachersneed more times to spent with our students. We can’t teach them without know their characters and personalizes. However we must to observe them for a week. Therefore we have two weeks to teach them. Actually, we can’t predict improvement of their knowledges just in two weeks. That’s why i hope SEA Teacher Project will give more time to teaching practice. In addition, i also hope for the next batch, SEAMEO add the kuota for SEA Teacher students because as we know that interested students was increase.
